Elder Abuse – Brief Description Elder abuse is any intentional or neglectful act that causes harm or distress to an older adult. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse, as well as neglect. Often underreported, elder abuse can occur at home, in care facilities, or within the community—and is most commonly committed by someone in a position of trust. Recognizing the signs and knowing how to respond is essential to protecting the health, safety, and dignity of older adults.
